Success Case: How a Company in Peru Ensured Temperature Control in the Thermal Treatment of Wood

A company in Peru, primarily dedicated to manufacturing wooden containers, with a focus on pallets, boxes, packaging, and other items for industrial transportation and storage, was facing difficulties with temperature control in its wood thermal treatment chamber.

The process was needed to ensure and maintain controlled thermal conditions throughout the entire wood load, guaranteeing compliance with the requirements established by SENASA (Servicio Nacional de Sanidad Agraria del Perú) and in accordance with the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures – ISPM No. 15.

However, the absence of a continuous temperature monitoring and recording system compromised process validation, putting at risk approval during official inspections and the reliability of products intended for export.

The problem faced by the customer

Before the implementation of the solution, there was no structured system for continuous temperature monitoring and recording in the thermal treatment chamber. Measurements were not tracked throughout the entire cycle, nor were they reliably recorded.

This generated direct impacts on the operation:

  • Inability to technically prove that the entire load reached and maintained the temperature required by ISPM No. 15;
  • Lack of historical data for audits and official inspections;
  • Recurring risk of pallet rejection, compromising the reliability of the final product.

Without recorded data, the process was neither auditable nor objectively verifiable.

The solution

The solution was developed and implemented by Zamtsu, the official distributor of NOVUS Automation in Peru for over 10 years and one of the main suppliers of monitoring and control solutions for strategic industries in the country, using a complete temperature measurement and continuous monitoring solution provided by NOVUS Automation, designed to meet the regulatory requirements of wood thermal treatment.

The core of the solution was FieldLogger, selected for its ability to operate with multiple measurement points and for its advanced data acquisition and recording capabilities.

Among the main differentiators applied in the project are:

  • Universal analog inputs, allowing the connection of multiple sensors distributed throughout the wood load;
  • Continuous temperature measurement recording, with a complete history of each thermal cycle;
  • Graphical visualization and statistical analysis of the data;
  • Generation of technical reports to prove compliance with ISPM 15;
  • Alarm management, increasing operational safety.

The solution was integrated with NXperience, NOVUS’ proprietary software responsible for data acquisition, organization, and process data management.

How the solution was implemented

The implementation began with the analysis of the thermal treatment chamber topology and the strategic definition of measurement points, ensuring that temperature was monitored representatively across the entire wood load.

Sensors were connected to FieldLogger, which centralized data acquisition. System configuration was carried out practically, leveraging the flexibility of the equipment for input adjustments, alarm settings, and recording parameters.

With NXperience, the team began to:

  • Monitor measurements in real time;
  • Track temperature graphs per thermal treatment cycle;
  • Generate complete reports with input history;
  • Use recorded data as technical evidence in audits and inspections.

After approximately one month of operation, the customer confirmed approval during the inspection carried out by SENASA, validating the effectiveness of the implemented solution.
