FieldLogger was not NOVUS first data logger

The name FieldLogger has been in use for more than two decades, but this was not the first data logger produced by NOVUS. In fact, the FieldLogger we know today was not even the first device to bear the name. We are already on the second version of one of the most famous products of the brand.

Learn about the predecessors of FieldLogger and observe the differences that evolution has brought to the data logger market.

NOVUS first data logger: DL4000

Produced in the 80s and 90s, DL4000 was the first data logger to hit the market under the NOVUS brand. Quite different from the current FieldLogger, it was a solid device and brought some advantages over its competitors. In addition, it was one of the few data logging solutions produced in Brazil.

It was possible to configure DL4000 using the equipment keyboard. The product contained a clock that marked the date and time of the logs, a feature that was a major differential. The NOVUS data logger came from the factory with 16 configurable universal inputs (Pt100, thermocouple, 4-20 mA, and 0-10 V). It contained relay outputs for alarm and a display capable of displaying up to 32 characters.

The downloaded data was stored in an internal memory and downloaded via a RS232 port. If the customer chose to buy the version with a reel printer, it could also be printed. These recorders were produced and customized according to the customer’s needs. They could have up to 64 analog inputs.

A modern data logger

Closer to the 00s, the FieldLogger 1.0 version entered the product portfolio. Like the current device, this one had a limited capacity of 128,000 logs and did not contain a screen to view data. The configuration and query of the registered information was done exclusively by software, such as FieldChart.

With 8 analog channels, 1 digital input, and 1 battery voltage input, communication was exclusively via Modbus RTU / RS485. Limited to 2 relays, this was also the number of alarms of the device functions.

While limited to current standards in terms of features and communication, there are still devices manufactured in 2008 that are in operation at customers. The strength of the NOVUS brand is a result of more than 40 years of developing and manufacturing electronic devices designed to be durable, robust, and reliable.

Expanding features: The new FieldLogger

In 2010, the world market became aware of a greater version, both in features and capabilities, of FieldLogger. The most visible of the evolutions was the integration of an HMI, which allowed the user to see technical information and some configurable variables. USB and mini-USB ports were another hardware improvement and allowed data download, software updates, and easy connection to computers.

It is now possible to take up to 512,000 logs, a figure that can be expanded by using a 32 Gb memory cards. The current FieldLogger model has 8 digital inputs or outputs and 8 universal analog channels. This device remains with 2 relays, but with 2 stages each (NC and NO).

A powerful data concentrator, this current version of FieldLogger can act either as master or as slave in a network with other devices, including other FieldLogger units. It also has an auxiliary 24v supply for powering sensors or transmitters.

Launched in 2010, this device has already received some updates that keep it meeting the demands of automation and data logging with safety and efficiency.
